Free Windows 10 Bad News for PC Makers

A research firm believes the free Windows 10 upgrade offer may have had a significant effect on new PC sales. It's part of an apparent pattern of users holding on to their old computers for longer. Speaking to The Register, Ranjit Atwal of Gartner ... said the company surveyed people who had taken advantage of the upgrade. It found that one in five of those questioned had decided against plans to get a new computer after trying out the new system on their existing machines. Atwal claims Microsoft did not expect that figure to be so high. (Source: theregister.co.uk ) In some ways the trend ... (view more)

Is the PC Dead? Reports Suggest Comeback in 2015

A new report suggests that the personal computer may be on the verge of making a comeback. The report comes from industry analysts Gartner and IDC, which state that there was only a slight drop in demand for personal computers during the third ... quarter of 2014. While those figures don't sound too impressive, the outcome is quite startling when considering the trend over the last three years. Since 2011, PC sales have been steadily declining. Some experts went so far as to suggest that we were witnessing the 'death of the PC' , with consumers opting for mobile devices -- like ... (view more)

Manufacturers' High Prices Killing PC Sales: Report

It's a well-known fact that the PC industry is in trouble. The rise of portable devices -- like smartphones and tablet computers -- has caused a consistent decline in PC sales . But some experts believe PC hardware makers are also to blame. The ... problem: PC prices remain too high for many consumers. Two months ago analyst firm IDC predicted a 1.3 per cent decline in PC sales through 2014. The grim prediction was based on PC sales through the first three months of 2013, when manufacturers shipped just 76.3 million units -- 13.9 per cent lower than the same period in 2012. Worldwide, second ... (view more)

Windows 8 Blamed For PC Sales Slump

According to a new report, the number of PCs sold around the world dropped by almost 14 per cent last year. Even the gloomiest forecasts failed to predict such a slump that many experts are blaming on Windows 8. The figures come from analyst firm ... IDC and combine reports from the major PC manufacturers. These reports cover the first three months of 2013 and compare them to the same period last year. The numbers actually refer to how many PCs the firms have sent to stores rather than how many have been bought by consumers and businesses. That can make it difficult to compare one quarter to the ... (view more)

Windows 7 Success to Blame for Recent PC Sales Slump

With the Apple iPad being touted as the "all-in-one" tablet computer, many would be inclined to think that its sudden global demand would account for a recent slump in PC sales. Industry analysts, however, believe that the decline is more closely ... linked to the success of Windows 7. In the aftermath of the 2010 holiday sales season, only 12 per cent of consumers admitted to purchasing an iPad in place of a standard PC (a slight dip from the 14 per cent who had initially picked up the tablet within the first six months of its availability). While the figures indicate that the release of ... (view more)

Recession Promises Slow Finish to 2010 for PC Market

In many parts of the country, kids are just getting ready for another year back at school. And although this usually means a lengthy spike in sales for electronics retailers, industry analysts Gartner predict PC shipments will slow considerably over ... the rest of 2010. Although Gartner Research has predicted a 19 per cent increase in PC shipments this year, it believes most of that hike will have come during the year's first half. In a recent report, Gartner said it expects second-half PC sales to drop 2 per cent from its original forecast, down to 15.3 per cent. Uncertain Economic Forecast ... (view more)

Win7 Sales off to Strong Start, but Will it Last?

According to Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, sales of the company's Windows 7 operating system have been nothing less than "fantastic" since its launch back on October 22. However, industry experts are wondering exactly why that is, ... and if the good times will last for MS. Speaking at a press event in Tokyo on Thursday, Microsoft CEO Ballmer gushed about Windows 7. He has reason to, thus far. According to industry stat-tracker NPD Group, boxed copies of Windows 7 have sold at a rate 234 per cent higher than Windows Vista during the same early period (in U.S. stores). Sales of ... (view more)
