Free Microsoft Office 2010 Upgrade Info Leaked Online
Interested in a free copy of Office 2010 but can't wait until summer to purchase the new software suite? It appears that Microsoft has let slip some interesting details about a forthcoming promotion aimed at potential Office 2010 customers this June.
The promotion, which is rumored to be called the "Microsoft Office 2010 Technology Guarantee Program," will pertain to those customers who purchase a copy of Office 2007 (with or without a new PC) from an authorized retailer between March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010, and who wish to upgrade to Office 2010 free of charge.
Office 2010: Activation Limited Time
Those wanting to take part in the upgrade offer must install and activate their copy of Office 2007 by September 30, 2010 and request their free copy of Office 2010 by October 31, 2010. These individuals will also need an activated Office 2007 Product Key and a dated sales receipt. One Office 2010 product will be allowed per qualifying Office 2007 purchase and there will be a limit of 25 copies of Office 2010 per person. (Source: arstechnica.com)
The only foreseeable catch is that while the Office 2010 software will be free for those who wish to download their copy, anyone wanting an actual Office 2010 disk will be charged a small fee, most likely to offset the costs associated with shipping and handling.
Office 2010 Info Leaked, then Deleted
The upgrade offer information was leaked online via the "In the Know - Charles Van Heusen Weblog". This is known to be a part of the Microsoft US Partner Community website. However, shortly after its initial posting, the information was quickly removed.
Analysts believe that Microsoft wanted to let their partners know about the offer well in advance, but the information was accidently posted on a public forum instead.
When questioned, an unnamed Microsoft spokesperson responded to the information leak stating "Microsoft has not disclosed an Office 2010 Technology Guarantee. We have no further comment at this time." (Source: arstechnica.com)
Offers such as this one are not uncommon to Microsoft -- a similar leak occurred for Windows 7 eight months ago.
The Technology Guarantee Programs for Microsoft Office and Windows currently says that the promotion offered for Windows XP has ended. The one for Microsoft Office 2003 is still available in nine countries. Microsoft did not announce which countries would honor the Office 2010 promotion, but it will likely be an international offer once again.
