Site Advisor Review
According to the Washington Post, the "number of phishing Web sites skyrocketed in December [2005], as did the number of sites designed to spread password-stealing badware, according to the most recent report from the Anti-Phishing Working Group." Furthermore, it's been estimated that the number of phishing web sites rose 55 percent from November to December in 2005. (Source: WashingtonPost.com).
So what can you do to protect yourself?
SiteAdvisor is an investigatory service that monitors web surfing habits and offers a safety-rating on the sites you visit and those that appear in web searches. SiteAdvisor is free and provides alerts either through the Internet Explorer toolbar or a Firefox extension.
In their Privacy Policy, SiteAdvisor promises protection of your privacy. And although the program maintains logs of the sites you visit, SiteAdvisor will not retain any information relating to your identity or your IP address. The data collected is merely used to help identify which websites should be investigated.
I've been using SiteAdvisor for a few weeks, and really enjoy using it.
For example: With SiteAdvisor installed in my browser, I typed in the word "screensaver" in Google and SiteAdvisor places either a red, yellow or green icon beside which sites it knows to be safe, and which ones aren't.
Click here for a sample screenshot.
And incase you happen to surf over to a dangerous web site, SiteAdvisor will also display a red button in the web browser.
But don't take my word for it! Check out SiteAdvisor for yourself. I think you'll like it as much as I do.
